A R35 coffee every day is R12,775 a year. Most people who hear that number for the first time do the same thing: they nod, and they do not change anything. That is fine. The point of this number is the method. Small daily amount, times 365.
R35, and nobody thinks twice. Times 365, and it is a second-hand car.
Nobody experiences R12,775. They experience R35, roughly 365 times, and the brain is very good at not multiplying. Every number on this page works the same way, which is why the habit number sits at three and not at one.
R2,400The streaming stack, give or take. And the petrol run you do not count.
Two hundred rand a month across the services you forgot you had is about R2,400 a year. The Friday petrol run to the garage for one thing is another number nobody tracks. You are now doing sums. Good.
The Friday stop for one thing. Nobody writes that one down either.
None of these are the point either. They are here because once you have multiplied two small things by 365, you will do it to the third one without being asked.
R1,520A month.
A pack of 20 in South Africa averages about R50 in 2026. One a day is R1,520 a month. If vaping is the habit, the maths lands in the same place: a R150 disposable every three days is R1,500 a month. Pouches, similar. Nobody pays it in one go, which is why it never feels like R1,520.
R50, most days, at a garage. Nobody sends an invoice for it, which is why it never adds up to anything.

Set the two next to each other and the R18,250 from number four becomes R4,560. That is the whole argument, and it is arithmetic rather than advice. Nobody in this category publishes a cost per day, which is odd, because it is the only number that lets you compare the two things honestly.
